Lori Spears
Lori Page Spears was raised in rural North Carolina, but has resided
in San Francisco for over a decade. She toiled for several years as
a staff photographer at the San Francisco Bay Guardian, an
alternative weekly newspaper, shooting flicks to accompany
everything from investigative reports to nightclub gossip columns;
art directed Other magazine; curated art shows; and mentored
photojournalism students.
She's currently splitting her time between taking photos for glossy
mags and investigating crimes for the local public defender's
office. That dual existence makes a lot of sense. At Indiana
University she double majored in art and criminal justice -- and
documentation and transgression pop up again and again as the two
key motifs in her life. Her favorite photos include portraits of
gangsters, cops, bikers, crime victims, anti-violence activists, and
average 'hood dwellers.
Spears likes bicycles, thugs, crafting, and travel. These days
you're more likely to find her at sports event -- cagefighting,
hockey, motorsports -- than an art show or music gig.
